A man who it is alleged tried to break into the tabernacle of Belclare church in search of money was refused bail when he appeared before Galway District Court via video-link from prison.
Martin McDonagh of 8, Droim Chaoin, Bishop O’Donnell Road, Galway was identified through the church CCTV system by investigating Gardaí.
Judge Fiona Lydon heard that Belclare church was entered on November 10 last and an attempt was made to force open the tabernacle. Damage to the value of €200 was caused to a candelabra, the property of Fr Blake.
McDonagh applied for bail but this was objected to by the Gardaí and the Judge refused. She remanded him in custody to appear again via video-link from prison at the September 22 sitting of Galway Court. Judge Lydon was informed that directions were awaited from the DPP on a second charge.
