After years of determination and dedication, the doors of the Pawel Edmund Strzelecki Polish House have opened, offering a cultural centre, a true home of memory, pride, and belonging.
The grand opening at Unit 1, Merlin Park Industrial Estate, Doughiska Road, was a day of celebration and symbolism. Deputy Mayor of Galway, Alan Cheevers, Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of Poland Artur Michalski, Members of the Polish Parliament’s Committee, local partners, and friends were some of those in attendance at the opening.
At the heart of the ceremony was the unveiling of a plaque honouring Pawe? Edmund Strzelecki, a Polish explorer and humanitarian who once walked Ireland’s famine roads to save lives.
The programme included an exhibition of Strzelecki’s life, a moving concert by a Galway-based musician, Robert Ciepli?ski, and the National Reading of Polish Poetry by Jan Kochanowski.
The guests were also welcomed to a special exhibition from Artana Gallery, showcasing Galway- and nature-inspired works created through the delicate quilling method. These vibrant paper artworks reflected both the beauty of Ireland’s landscapes and the creative spirit of the Polish community.
More than a venue, the Polish House is envisioned as a living home of culture and community. It will host psychological support sessions, art therapy, workshops for children, clubs for seniors, cultural events, and integration programmes which are open for all those who wish to avail.
‘This is not just bricks and mortar, ’ said Patrycja Cichocka, coordinator of the project, ‘It is the heartbeat of our community – a place where Poles and friends of Poland can celebrate their heritage, share stories, and find support. It is a home built out of love for our homeland, and out of gratitude for Ireland, which welcomed us.”
The Polish House was made possible through the tireless work of the Come2gether volunteers, with the support of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, in partnership with the Zbigniew Pe?czy?ski School of Leadership in Warsaw and the Norwegian organisation Solidaritet.
Its opening was further strengthened by the sponsorship of local Polish shops and businesses, a testament to the solidarity and resilience of the community.
As part of the celebrations, the Exhibition on the life and achievements of Pawe? Edmund Strzelecki will remain open during the Culture Night, welcoming visitors all day at the Polish House (above Polonez shop ) in Doughiska.
