The hugely popular fundraising event, ‘Swim in Pink’, celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. Organised by the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI ) in association with Blackrock Beachwear it has been an incredible success since its beginning in 2020.
Taking place in October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the event encourages participants across the country to dip, swim, or splash in support of breast cancer research. The swim has won many awards and more than 5,000 swimmers have taken part, raising over €500,000 for life-saving research.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Ireland, with 1 in 7 women expected to develop the disease and over 3,587 new cases diagnosed annually. Researchers funded by NBCRI, based at the Lambe Institute, University of Galway, are currently leading major national and international projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
This year the swim takes place earlier than usual on Sunday, 12th October from 9am, (in the water at 9.45am ) at Ladies Beach, in Galway, with many additional swims happening nationwide. Participants can find their nearest event on the interactive locations map at, www.swiminpink.ie
Registration costs just €25, with all proceeds supporting the research work funded by NBCRI. Every registered swimmer will also receive a FREE ‘Swim in Pink’ swim cap.
