Known for his iconic roles as Michael Scott in the US adaptation of The Office, Crazy Stupid Love, Despicable Me, Little Miss Sunshine and many more, actor Steve Carell brought a little bit of Hollywood to the Aran Islands this week.
Describing the experience as an “honour”, family-owned tour company Doolin Ferry transported Carell to Inis Meáin on Monday this week. In a move that would make Michael Scott proud, Carell even took the helm of the ferry briefly during his visit, later posing for photographs with members of the crew.
Commenting on the latest celebrity visit, Liam O’Brien said, “It’s always a pleasure to welcome special guests aboard Doolin Ferry. Each visit is a reminder of how lucky we are to operate in such a stunning part of the world.”
According to the company, Carell is the latest in a long line of celebrities to sail with Doolin Ferry, having previously welcomed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay aboard last year. Ramsay travelled with Doolin Ferry to Inis Oírr to film scenes for National Geographic’s acclaimed series ‘Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted’.
Earlier this summer, Doolin Ferry welcomed Christopher McDonald, best known for his role as the villainous golfer Shooter McGavin in the comedy Happy Gilmore and its recently released sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. McDonald joined a Doolin Ferry tour beneath the Cliffs of Moher, taking in the breathtaking views of one of Ireland’s most iconic natural landmarks.
Liam and his crew say that while these celebrity visits are very welcome, regardless of star power, each passenger aboard Doolin Ferry receives the same quality of care.
“Whether our passengers are celebrities or visiting for the first time, our goal is the same: to give everyone an unforgettable experience on the water, combining breathtaking scenery with a true sense of Irish hospitality.”

News of Carell’s visit to Galway has quickly spread, prompting bookmakers to run bets on whether the actor will appear on locally filmed and produced Irish-language soap Ros na Rún.
Having been spotted in multiple locations across the west, bookmakers Ladbrokes have Carell’s appearance on the show at odds of 4/1. He would not be the first from across the pond to make his way onto the show, with previous guests including Conan O’Brien and Stephen Fry.
Speaking about the potential special guest appearance, Ladbrokes’ Cal Gildart said, “Punters think it was more than just a holiday Steve Carell was taking out west this week. An appearance in Ros na Rún is what punters believe he was up to while taking in the breathtaking west of Ireland scenery.”
