Senator Seán Kyne has welcomed the An Coimisiún Pleanála decision to grant planning permission for safety works at Gortacleva and Kentfield, Bushypark on the N59.

Planning permission follows on from funding of €270,000 announced for the project in this year’s Transport Infrastructure Ireland roads funding allocation to Galway County Council.

The proposed N59 Kentfield/Gortacleva Road Safety Junction Improvement Scheme consisting of the construction of an approximately 245 metre section of the N59 national road and approximately 50 metre section of L-5381 local Gortacleva road, which includes a new improved junction layout between N59/L-5381.

The works will consist of online realignment works, with associated drainage, including an underground settlement and attenuation tank, fencing, kerbs, footpath, signage and all site development and landscaping works, utility diversion works, landowner accommodation works, and other ancillary road works.

“The Gortacleva road junction is dangerous as it joins the N59 at the top of a small hill near Killeen bends. While this improvement scheme is 245 metres it is hoped that its completion will be the first phase of a project to improve safety in this area including Killeen bends,” said Senator Kyne.

Senator Kyne said he expects Galway County Council to proceed to preparing tender documents and appointing a contactor over the coming months.
