The National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI ), a national charity based at the Lambe Institute University of Galway, have appointed a new fundraising manager, Louise McCarron.
With over thirteen years’ experience in the charity sector, her most recent role was as fundraising manager with the Irish Hospice Foundation, but Louise has worked or volunteered with many charitable organisations including; Make-A-Wish UK, WALK and Foróige.
Speaking about her experience working in the charity sector Louise said, “For me, seeing the real impact that charities have on individuals and families across Ireland is what drives me. It’s incredibly motivating to know that the work you do can make a real difference. None of the fundraising is the same and every day is different That variety keeps the work exciting and very rewarding”.
Born in Birmingham, but brought up in Bundoran, Donegal, her working life has being based in Dublin, so Louise was delighted to have the change to return to the West.
“I really enjoyed my 1more than ten years living in Dublin but with home being Donegal, the move to Galway felt right. Even in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve felt a sense of community. People are friendly and have time for a chat, it’s something you don’t find everywhere, and it’s something I really value.”
Speaking about her new role with NBCRI, Louise went onto ssaid the situation is heartbreaking.
“So many have received a breast cancer diagnosis. The statistics surprised me if I am honest. One in seven women in Ireland will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, with over 3,500 cases diagnosed each year.
“Behind these numbers are people and families whose lives are impacted but research can and is helping to change things for the better and I’m thrilled to be now part of the team helping to support Prof Michael Kerin and his research team improve outcomes for those with breast cancer.”
