An event on ‘Finding Galway families in the Virtual Record Treasury’ by Dr Ciarán Wallace, Co-Director, Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland, Department of History, Trinity College, Dublin will be held in the Council Chamber, Áras an Chontae, Galway County Council, Prospect Hill, Galway on Wednesday next.
The Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland (VRTI ) is an all-island and international research partnership hosted by Trinity College Dublin, working to reconstruct the collections of the Public Record Office of Ireland — a magnificent archive destroyed in 1922 at the outset of the Civil War.
The VRTI team hunts for copies and transcripts made before the fire of 1922. Among these are over 60,000 names from the lost censuses before and after the Famine. This talk will introduce the VRTI’s ‘Population Portal’ – a dedicated area on the website for family historians – giving helpful tips and tricks for finding your Galway ancestors on this free public research site.
There will be a talk on ‘Digital Mapping of Galway County Graveyards’ to be given by Marie Mannion
This will be followed by an interactive workshop on exploring your family history and genealogy. Expert genealogists and local community experts will guide you through the process of tracing your roots, finding ancestral records, and delving into fascinating family stories.
This event will assist you to gain insights from experienced professionals and community heritage groups who will provide tips and tools for successful family research. It will also connect with fellow history enthusiasts and genealogy experts, share stories, and exchange research strategies.
