Aya Bundurakis, the visiting artist-in-residence at Thoor Ballylee, will host a nature-based creativity workshop “Slippery Bodies: Eels & Salmon as Guides” on Saturday, August 2. The workshop is free, for ages 6-12, and will be held from 10.30am-1pm at Thoor Ballylee.

In this children’s workshop, she will swirl into the meeting worlds of eels and salmon: two magical creatures who journey between fresh and salt water, crossing time, myth, and memory. They cross each other in the estuary: the salmon swims home, upstream, guided by scent and memory, while the eel slips outward toward the unknown, following secrets we don’t fully understand.

Inspired by the legend of the Salmon of Knowledge (Bradán Feasa ) and the mysterious life of the Eel, participants will use clay, drawing, and words to explore what it means to transform, to migrate, and to know —like a fish. What happens when an eel and a salmon meet in the river? What stories do they remember? What might they become?

Aya Bundurakis is Thoor Ballylee’s artist-in-residence this year at The Studio at Thoor Ballylee, W.B. Yeats’s summer home near Gort, County Galway from 26 July to 9 August. She lives between the islands of Crete and Corfu.

The workshop is free, but booking is strongly recommended by emailing [email protected].

Please note that children should be accompanied by a guardian. The workshop will go ahead rain or shine, so please dress appropriately. For more information contact Yeats Thoor Ballylee via [email protected] or 091 631436
