Twenty three Galway city and county charities received grants totalling more than €290,000 from the People in Need funds raised during the 2007 RTÉ People In Need Telethon.
Galway raised an impressive €290,865, almost doubling the fundraising target of €150,000 and raising the fourth highest amount in the State. The figures were announced on Monday by Fine Gael city councillor Hildegarde Naughton who coordinated the Galway People in Need campaign.
“It was a great result for Galway charities and will make a big difference to people’s lives in these difficult times,” she said. “We could not have achieved a result like this without those who gave their time to the campaign, including my hardworking committee, the schools, businesses, youth clubs, community organisations, members of the public, and private donors who came out in such large numbers on Telethon Day.”
Cllr Naughton also thanked Olivia Roche and Stephen Hughes of the Eyre Square Centre for providing its office facility and Oliver Walsh Motors for sponsoring the People in Need Jeep.
All money raised in Galway will stay in Galway. Galway Hospice, Galway Simon Community, Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Contact, Ability West, and Gra Autism Parents Group are just some of the charities to benefit from the funding.
