The Man who saved an Irish Rain Forest talk with McHugh, environmental activist and former Green Party politician, will take place in the Bailey Allen Hall, University of Galway and will discuss rewilding in Ireland and Daltun’s journey of saving a dying 73-acre wild rainforest in the Beara Peninsula.
On discovering that his land was the home of an Irish rainforest, Daltun said: “Now, I didn’t know that it was a rainforest at the time. Nobody back then was talking about rainforests in an Irish context. It was only through reading international literature that I came to understand that what I had was rainforest, and I kind of raised awareness of that with my first book, An Irish Atlantic Rainforest.”
Daltun is hoping that Galway audiences, whether living in the city or in the countryside, will come away with an excitement about the possibility that rewilding Ireland offers. With plenty of time to ask questions, audience members will get the chance to engage and ask specifically about natural elements within the Irish landscape that they are passionate about.
Rewilding goes beyond one man’s efforts, and as Daltun said, “If we live in a sterile nature-free landscape, it makes our lives so much duller.”
