FG Councillor Andrew Reddington has announced that essential safety improvement works will commence on Church Road near Headford National School, next week.

This project will be carried out in two stages, beginning with the first phase on Monday, July 21.

The initial works will include:

-Slight widening of the footpath near the pedestrian crossing at Headford National School.

-Widening of both footpaths near the entrance to Tesco.

-Installation of a raised ramp in the direction towards Tesco.

These improvements aim to enhance safety during busy school mornings, particularly when both Headford National School and the secondary school are at peak times. The local community has expressed numerous requests for safer walking routes in this area, and these works are part of ongoing efforts to make walking to school easier and safer for children and parents alike.

The works are expected to cause limited disruption. Once completed, and following Race Week, there will be an overlay of the entire road from Varleys Pub to Headford National School, including line marking to further improve road safety.

Additionally, age-friendly parking zones will be introduced at Headford Post Office. Further investments under the Active Travel initiative are planned near the school, but this will have to go out on public display as per NTA Guidelines.

Councillor Reddington expressed his satisfaction that these improvements are starting before the new school term, emphasising the importance of ensuring a safer environment for children walking to school.
