Galway athletes achieve European U23 squad selection

Four of Galway’s top athletes have achieved European U23 Selection for this year’s championships in Bergen, Norway, between July 17 to 20.

Emma Moore of Galway City Harriers will compete over 800m individually following her great early season performances, and also is chosen on the 4x400m Relay team. Andrew Egan will also compete in the 200m and the 4x400m events.

Tuam AC athlete Alix Joyce has been selected for the testing 3000m Steeplechase event, while South Galway AC star David Mannion has been picked for the Men’s 4x400m relay team.

National Track and Field League

The National Track and Field League commenced last weekend with three Galway teams in action – Galway County Men’s and Women’s Teams and Galway City Harriers Men.

All three teams qualified for the National League finals in Tullamore on July 27. Both teams finished top of the table after the preliminary round.

On the day, the Galway ladies team achieved victories by Sinead Treacy in the 400m, Nicole Walsh in the 200m, Laura Nally in the 100m, Alix Joyce in the 1500m, and Fauve Alymer in the 800m.

The 4x100m relay team of Nicole Walsh, Nicole Quirke, Angela Cielecka and Laura Nally and the 4x400m relay team of Sinead Treacy, Alix Joyce, Aine Maguire and Danielle Moynihan also secured victory.

The Galway men's team had six wins. Winners on the day were Raekwon Lucciano in the 100m, Ben Edeh in the 400m, Liam Shaw in the shot and discus, Abaas Adam Edris in the steeplechase and Justin Lane in the pole vault.

GCH fielded a strong Men’s team, and placed 14th overall in the Club division, featuring the likes of Jonah Erugo, Ben Sheehan, Chris Jonker and Keith Fallon, qualifying them for the Division 1 final on July 27.

National Junior and U23 Championships

Saturday saw the best Under-20 and Under-23 Athletes in the country descend on Tullamore for the National Championships. Galway athletes secured multiple medals over the series of events.

Conor Penney of Craughwell AC was again the star of the show with a superb 2:08 clearance in the High-Jump to win gold by a massive 28cm. Also, for the club, Lauren Kilduff came second in the U20 400m with a 1:01.09 clocking.

Athenry’s Sean Doggett showed all his class to win the Men’s 400m in a new championship record of 47.08 seconds. Doubling up for Athenry was US scholarship athlete Liam Shaw who excelled in winning gold for both Discus and Shot.

Darragh Fahy of Loughrea AC continued his medal haul this season by winning another gold in the U20 Triple jump setting a personal best of 14.22 metres.

For Tuam AC, Alix Joyce dominated the 3000m steeplechase with a strong win, while Matthew Newell won his first outdoor U20 title in the 5000m Race Walk.

Savannah O’Callaghan returned from injury with a strong silver medal-winning performance in the 3000m Race Walk.

South Galway AC won Gold via Orlaith Mannion, who stormed home in the U20 Girls 100m hurdles All-Ireland final, while clubmate David Mannion won bronze in a stacked U23 Men's 400m final in Tullamore.

Padraig Faherty for GCH took a bronze medal in the gruelling 3000m Steeplechase, as did Emma Moore who added a National U23 bronze over 400m to her National Senior 800m indoor silver.

West Coast AC were well represented by Daniel Sangodele who won National silver behind Darragh Fahy in the Triple jump.
