A man charged with offences including alleged impersonation of a garda, false imprisonment, and assault, was remanded on continuing bail for the service of a book of evidence.
Vincent Furey (32 ) with an address at Monastery Road, Ballyglunin, Tuam, is charged with theft of a mobile, assault, robbery, false imprisonment, and impersonation of a member of the Garda Siochana on Janaury 1, 2009, at Silver Strand.
Inspector Pat McHugh told Judge Mary Fahy that it will be alleged that at 4am a 22-year-old man had been walking down Silver Strand when the defendant, driving his car, stopped him and claimed to be a garda. It is believed that Furey then insisted that the injured party was too drunk and that he get into the car to be brought home.
The court heard that the young man refused, walked away, and phoned a friend. The defendant is further accused of grabbing the injured party’s hands, while claiming to be initiating an arrest, and taking the mobile phone. A passing taxi driver then intervened and the defendant fled.
Judge Fahy refused to have the matter heard in the district court and remanded the defendant on continuing bail to September 16 for service of a book of evidence.
