Caherlistrane native Tony Gallagher, now living in Dublin, is preparing for two major endurance events to raise funds for the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation, a charity that has been vital in supporting his young daughter, Maisie.

This July, Tony will cycle the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and also take part in the Ballinskelligs Triathlon relay alongside his sisters, Caroline and Debbie. Caroline will run 10km, Debbie will swim 1.5km, and Tony will complete the final cycling leg of the race.

Tony’s daughter Maisie was diagnosed in August 2023 with CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder, a rare and severe neurological condition. It causes significant developmental delays, visual impairment, and epilepsy that is difficult to treat. Following an extended stay in Temple Street Children’s Hospital, the family returned home to face the demands of full-time care.

The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation stepped in to provide in-home nursing care, guidance, and much-needed respite. This included home visits from liaison nurses, the introduction of specially trained paediatric nurses, and ongoing support to help the family navigate the challenges of caring for a child with a life-limiting condition.

The charity, founded in 1997 by Jonathan Irwin and Mary Ann O’Brien in memory of their son Jack, supports children up to the age of six with severe cognitive delay and serious medical conditions. Each €18 raised provides one hour of professional nursing care in the home, allowing parents the chance to rest, attend appointments, or spend time with their other children.

All funds raised by Tony and his family will go directly to the Jack & Jill Foundation. Their goal is to give back to the organisation that has made such a difference to their lives, and to help ensure other families receive the same vital support.
