Cllr John McDonagh has welcomed the commencement of long-awaited lighting repairing works at Beach Court which is the first of several Galway City estates to undergo infrastructure repairs following severe damage caused by Storm Eowyn in January.

The storm, which struck six months ago, caused significant damage to public lighting systems across multiple residential areas, including Beach Court, Inchagill, Salthill, and others. Underground cabling was severely affected, and full inspections and planning were required before any work could safely proceed.

“I’ve been working closely with Galway City Council over the past number of months to ensure these issues were prioritised, assessed properly, and moved into action,” said Cllr. McDonagh. “Today marks week one of the Lighting Decided Implementation Phase here in Beach Court, and I’m very pleased to see the works starting.”

The works at Beach Court will involve full re-cabling, ducting, and lighting system repairs with an expected completion time of approximately three weeks. Following this, attention will shift to the remaining affected estates — including Inchagoill and several locations in Salthill — as part of a city-wide programme to restore safe and reliable lighting services.

“This is about more than just fixing lights — it’s about restoring trust and delivering for communities that have waited months for action. I want to thank the residents for their patience and Galway City Council for their continued cooperation in making this happen," he said.
