ALDI Ireland has announced that it will reopen its store in Clifden, Co. Galway, which closed almost six months ago due to damage caused by Storm Éowyn on Thursday next, July 3. As well as the necessary repair works, the store has been fully refurbished to include the addition of a new in-store bakery and self-service checkouts. This move is part of ALDI’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, affordable groceries and a vital place of employment to the people of Galway.

The new store will be officially opened by the local team, led by Store Manager Barbara Hehir, alongside Connacht and Ireland rugby star John Muldoon.

ALDI Clifden, which originally opened in 2009, currently employs 16 members of the local community. The store’s reopening stands as a testament to the dedication of ALDI’s local team and the skill of the builders and tradespeople involved in its refurbishment.

Speaking today, Barbara Hehir, Store Manager ALDI Clifden said this is a store that has become so meaningful to the local community.

“Throughout the time we’ve been closed, the support we’ve received both from ALDI and the community in Clifden has been amazing and I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with our Clifden customers again.”

John Muldoon said that he is looking forward to being there to officially reopen the ALDI Clifden store.

“The commitment and hard work of all the team has ensured a smooth return to business. As a Galway native, I’m aware of the importance of this store to the local community, and I’m incredibly proud to be associated with a company that’s so deeply committed to supporting Irish communities and businesses and continues to deliver high-quality, affordable, and nutritious food across Ireland.”

The ALDI Clifden store underwent a complete refurbishment after sustaining severe damage from Storm Éowyn. The refurbishment project involved extensive clearing of debris from the storm, a full strip-out of the store interior, stabilising and repairing the roof followed by a full interior refit. During the closure, ALDI ensured continued employment for Clifden staff by redeploying them to other stores in the area.

The refurbished store will feature a new in-store bakery, baking fresh bread daily, as well as seven self-service checkout terminals. Existing staffed checkout lines will remain in operation alongside the new self-service tills, with ALDI committed to retaining this service for customers, while continuing to innovate with new initiatives.

The store has been designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. It is powered by 100% green electricity and features ALDI’s Electronic Shelf Labels in store in place of traditional paper price labels, meaning that stock or price changes can be quickly and easily communicated to customers.

In 2024 alone, ALDI spent over €17 million with suppliers in Galway. The retailer is proud to partner with local Galway suppliers, including long-standing partnership with Divilly Brothers Ltd. ALDI works with a network of over 330 suppliers across Ireland, spending over 1.1 billion with them annually.

ALDI’s commitment to Galway extends beyond economic investment. Through its partnership with FoodCloud, ALDI’s Galway stores have donated the equivalent of over 62,000 meals to local charities and community organisations, demonstrating a continued dedication to sustainability and community support.

Like all ALDI stores, the Clifden store has participated in ALDI’s 2025 Community Grants programme, which sees each store nominate a local charity or community group to receive a €500 ALDI gift card. This year’s winning recipients will be announced later in the year.

The Clifden store opening hours are Mon to Sat: 08:00 - 22:00 and Sunday: 09:00 - 21:00.
