In Claregalway, a dedicated group of volunteers has been steadily working to enhance the appearance and environment of their community. This year, the group has grown to 11 volunteers, and the rise reflects a growing recognition of the improvements being made.
The team identifies opportunities for enhancement, including tending to green spaces, mowing lawns, installing planters and flower baskets, and taking on various clean-up efforts. One of the key achievements last year for Claregalway Tidy Towns was the transformation of the Nine Arches Bridge, which was cleared and beautified with a newly planted lawn and trees.
More improvements are in the works, including the development of a cycle lane and new footpaths that will connect with the existing paths around the bridge.Tidy Towns are also working hard to enhance the sustainability and biodiversity in Claregalway. Projects have included installing bat boxes, planting along the river walk, and creating small wildflower areas to attract bees and other pollinators.
The group meets every Thursday from 7pm to 9 pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm, carrying out tasks such as planting, sweeping, and cleaning. The Tidy Town teams are encouraging all residents to get involved in maintaining Claregalway’s beauty, as it benefits the entire community, not just one person. Volunteers range from seven or eight years old to people over 70 years old, so everybody can sign up.
The team area is also appealing for more local businesses to join in, and they will be provided with window boxes and flowers to make their space more colourful. The group has received strong support from Hughes SuperValu and several smaller businesses in the area.
“Without Hughes’ SuperValu generous sponsorship, we could not do what we have been doing,” said Maura Doyle, the Tidy Town chairperson. “Making Claregalway beautiful and having pride in where we live!”To join the Tidy Town effort, please visit Hughes SuperValu to sign up.
