Galway name Ó Loingsigh/Lynch is set to feature in this Sunday’s episode of Sloinne, the TG4 series exploring the history of some of Ireland’s most widespread surnames.

Each episode of the series sees a person go in search of the story of their own surname, travelling to an area closely associated with the name and learning more about its origins, as well as the historical figures and clans which shaped the history of Ireland.

The Lynches were the most prominent of the renowned 14 Tribes of Galway, and Sunday’s episode will see actor Pádraig Ó Loingsigh travel to Galway to learn more about this powerful family.

Mr Ó Loingsigh returns from UK for this episode, where he is currently cast in MOONLIGHT, The Philip Lynott Enigma as the character of Brendan Behan.

The latest series of Sloinne also features the surnames Mac Gearailt/FitzGerald, Ó Briain/O’Brien, Ó Néill/O’Neill, De Paor/Power, and Ó Gallachóir/Gallagher.

Previous episodes have featured included Rónán Mac Gearailt, a lecturer at ATU, Galway, exploring the Mac Gearailt /Fitzgerald stronghold in Limerick; and Yvonne Ní Chatháin from Cill Chiaráin, Co Galway, who visited Northern Ireland, Kerry and Caherlistrane in Co Galway in search of the history of the Ó Catháin/Keane surname.

The Ó Loingsigh/Lynch episode of Sloinne will be broadcast on TG4 this Sunday, June 15 at 8.30pm.
