One of Galway’s most storied football clubs, West United FC, is set to mark a major milestone this weekend as they celebrate their 80th anniversary with a special celebration at the Galway Bay Hotel on Saturday night, May 31. Founded in 1945, West United has become a pillar of the local football community and a driving force in the development of the sport across all levels in the county.

The club has come a long way since its humble beginnings, evolving into a vibrant organisation that now fields many teams across a wide range of age groups and categories. From academy squads and youth teams to senior, ladies, and even over-42s sides, and now fielding more than 20 teams, West United continues to nurture talent and promote inclusivity in the game. Among its notable alumni are legends such as Eamonn Deacy who donned the colours before and after his professional career with Aston Villa; Tommy Keane, Kevin Cassidy, Stephen Lally, Gerry Daly and Noel Mernagh are among many others. So, there are many heroes and role models to inspire as the club is now making inroads in the academy fields.

Recent years have brought more silverware to the shelves, including a memorable U13 championship win in early 2025—a testament to the club’s continued commitment to excellence and youth development.

The momentum created by the 80th anniversary is driven by chairperson Josie Forde who has been a motivating force within the growing club and the celebration promises to be an unforgettable evening filled with nostalgia, community spirit, and the chance to win some truly spectacular prizes in their special raffle draw.

Organised as a key fundraising event, the raffle is already generating major buzz, with a first prize that is nothing short of extraordinary: a seven-night Mediterranean cruise for two, courtesy of West United and their travel partners at JWT Travel. All funds raised go to the underage academy.

This once-in-a-lifetime trip includes return Aer Lingus flights to Barcelona, an all-inclusive premium cruise package, and €500 in spending money. Destinations include iconic European cities such as Marseille, Genoa, Messina, Naples, and Valetta, making this a dream getaway for one lucky winner.

Additional prizes include a relaxing Wild Atlantic Getaway at the luxurious Wild Atlantic Apartments, generously sponsored by Jonathan Corbett, and a chic one-night City Retreat in a private suite at The Nest Boutique Hostel, with thanks to Keith Kissane.

With tickets priced at just €10 for one, €25 for three, or €50 for seven, it’s a small investment for a potentially life-changing reward. But time is of the essence—only a limited number of tickets remain, and none will be sold on the night. Interested supporters are urged to get in touch with main organiser Willie Grant 085 7553120 or any club committee member to secure their entry.

The draw will take place live on Facebook during the anniversary event and will be conducted independently, with the assistance of special guests and the management team at the Galway Bay Hotel.

Special guests on the night include Ireland stars Packie Bonner and Julie Ann Russell and the music is by Pyramid and later from DJ Macca.

More than just a celebration, the event and raffle form a vital part of West United’s ongoing fundraising drive, aimed at upgrading and expanding the club’s facilities to support its growing number of teams and players.

As the club looks ahead to the next chapter in its proud history, this weekend’s event is a chance to honour its past, support its future, and maybe even sail into the sunset with the prize of a lifetime.
