The ongoing lack of critical water infrastructure on the Eastside of Galway City has reached a tipping point with Cllr Alan Cheevers saying that no further housing developments can proceed until a decision is made on the Merlin Park Pumping Station this June.

The Eastside has seen rapid population growth in recent years, but water infrastructure has failed to keep pace. The Merlin Pumping Station, a vital component of the eastside of city future water supply network, remains in limbo awaiting approval. This delay is stalling urgently needed housing projects and placing significant pressure on existing water systems.

“We cannot continue to promise homes without water connection, said Cllr Cheevers. “The decision on the Merlin Pumping Station must be made now.The lack of clarity threatens not only housing but also economic development, investment, and the city’s long-term planning goals. The Eastside’s potential is clear, but it hinges on swift and decisive action from relevant authorities. This must be a priority of Government to fund the badly needed infrastructure for housing on Eastside which is a growing population. We have council housing projects on hold awaiting water connection,” he said.
