First plays third in front of the TV cameras on Saturday night, when Galway United entertain Athlone Town in a crucial league encounter in Eamonn Deacy Park.
There is rarely a dull game between these two. Galway United had the unusual distinction of beating last season’s champions twice in 2024.
The second victory did come after the Midlanders had already wrapped the title up. Saturday’s game has the potential to be much more consequential for this season’s outcome.
It seems fair to suggest that the reigning champions are the team to beat this season. Last time out in the league, they turned over another contender, Treaty United. They also beat a tricky Wexford team on the opening day. A changed team suffered a setback in the All-Island Cup against Glentoran. Athlone Town, managed by former United players Colin Fortune and Gordon Brett, will have their sights firmly set on what is a reviving rivalry thanks to the women’s game.
Galway United have plenty of form to bring into the game, coming off the back of an impressive win over Cliftonville in the All-Island Cup.
A last-gasp Kate Thompson goal decided the tie in the Tribewsomen’s favour after they had fallen behind early to a clinical finish from Caitlin McGuinness. Emily Fitzgerald levelled the game brilliantly after a clever pass from Emma Doherty.
The teenager’s second in two games is an exceptional return and even more noteworthy as she is sharing her success with other teenagers such as Ava Mullins, Heather Loomes and Anna McGough. The latter, a 15-year-old product of Corrib Celtic, made a huge contribution upon her introduction, combining with Rola Olusola to tee-up Thompson for the winner.
United can be said to have needed the injection of youth given the unavailability of some more experienced campaigners. The likes of Isabella Beletic and Amanda Smith were given the day off last Saturday, but they will be needed against Athlone.
Ceola Bergin’s mere presence on the bench was a positive sign and she could have a big say on Saturday if available. United will not want to hold anything in reserve. The importance of the game is difficult to downplay.
The adage cross-channel of not being able to win the league by Christmas but being able to lose it feels applicable to May for Galway United. They have nearly a month off league action after the next fortnight of action.
It feels as if they will need to enter that break in contention and with momentum if they are to take the next step on an incredible journey.
