Dolan welcomes €667k for Local Heritage Sites

Galway TD Albert Dolan has warmly welcomed the announcement of €667,033.99 in funding for Galway under the 2025 Community Monuments Fund. The funding, confirmed by Minister of State for Nature, Heritage & Biodiversity Christopher O'Sullivan TD, will support the protection and conservation of some of Galway’s most significant archaeological and built heritage sites.

“This is fantastic news for communities across Galway,” said the Deputy. “These awards will ensure our rich and diverse built heritage can continue to be preserved and enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike. I want to thank Minister James Browne for recognising the importance of our archaeological heritage, and for continuing to invest in its protection.”

Funding has been awarded to the following Galway projects:

Menlough Castle - €130,000

St. Nicholas Collegiate Church - €120,000

Temple Jarlath - €99,835.80

Ballinasloe Town Wall - €100,975

Kilcooley - €100,772.05

Killeely - €29,520

Castlehacket - €29,827.50

Rathgurreen Ringfort - €9,333.24

Kilboght Graveyard - €7,815.90

Community Mons StoryMaps Ph2 - €9,005.50

Issertkelly - €29,949

The announcement comes ahead of World Heritage Day on Friday, April 18, a global celebration that highlights the importance of cultural heritage and the efforts needed to preserve it. The Deputy said today’s funding aligns perfectly with the spirit of World Heritage Day, adding: “This is a timely reminder of the value of our past—and the need to continue safeguarding it for future generations.”

The Community Monuments Fund provides grants for conservation works, the development of heritage management plans, and essential research that contributes to the long-term preservation of archaeological sites across Ireland.
