Ogbu secures approval for a disability access officer and Inclusion Committee

Councillor Helen Ogbu successfully passed a motion at the latest Galway City Council meeting, paving the way for the establishment of a disability access officer and a Disability and Inclusion Committee.

“This is a significant step forward in ensuring that Galway city is accessible, inclusive, and representative of all its citizens,” said Cllr Ogbu.

The motion calls for a disability access officer – a dedicated advocate within the council to oversee accessibility initiatives and champion the rights of people with disabilities. It also calls for a Disability and Inclusion Committee inspired by Wicklow County Council’s DISC. This committee will ensure that disabled people have a direct voice in shaping policies and decisions affecting them.

“This committee, facilitated by the disability access officer, will work closely with stakeholders, advocacy groups, and community representatives to enhance accessibility across all council services,” Cllr Ogbu added.

Cllr Ogbu expressed gratitude to the council and fellow councillors for their support: “I look forward to seeing this motion come to life through meaningful implementation and real, lasting impact for our disabled community.

“By adopting this motion, the Galway City Council is taking a leadership role in championing disability rights and fostering a more inclusive city.

“Now, we must ensure swift and effective implementation to create real change.”
