Nissan has announced that the Micra model will return to European roads later this year in the guise of an all-electric vehicle.
The announcements did not stop there as it was revealed that joining the electric Micra in 2025 will be a new, third generation version of the hugely popular Nissan Leaf. Production is due to commence soon at the company's plant in Sunderland.
In addition, the Sunderland plant will build upgraded versions of the Qashqai with e-Power technology. The brand has also announced that the next generation Juke – available for the first time as an EV – will arrive at some stage during 2026.
The Micra returns
First to launch in 2025 will be the all-new Micra, which Nissan says will remain true to the DNA of its predecessors with a mix of style and simplicity in a compact package.
It will share the same AmpR Small platform as the new Renault 5 E-Tech electric, and will be available with two battery options: 40kWh and 52kWh, providing a maximum range of around 400km.
The Micra EV will be built in France and should arrive in Irish showrooms in time for the 261-registration period. A starting price of less than €30k is expected.
Third generation of Leaf EV to follow
Introduced in 2010 and seen as the first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf is being heavily revised this year. The third generation of Leaf will be developed on Nissan’s CMF-EV platform, architecture it shares with its larger sibling, the Ariya.
The European version of the new Leaf will be manufactured at Nissan’s production facility in Sunderland, and forms part of the brand's EV36Zero project to transform the Plant into a flagship EV hub, bringing together electric vehicles, renewable energy and battery production.
