Bank holiday sees 36 patients on trolleys in Galway

Galway University Hospital had the third highest number of patients waiting on trolleys across the country this week, after a busy bank holiday weekend.

Figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives’ Organisation (IMO ) show the main hospital in Galway city had 36 patients waiting on trolleys as of Wednesday this week.

The busy Emergency Department had 31 patients on trolleys waiting for a bed, whilst a further 5 patients were lying on trolleys outside wards in the western region’s primary healthcare facility.

University Hospital Limerick had the most admissions waiting on trolleys this week – 66 patients, whilst University Hospital Cork came a close second with 58.

Across the country, 442 admitted patients were waiting for beds on Wednesday morning, according to the INMO Trolley Watch, of whom 15 were aged under 16 years old.

In emergency departments nationally, 310 patients are waiting , while 132 are on trolleys elsewhere in hospitals.

So far this year, 2,941 patients in University Hospital Galway have been forced to stay overnight on a trolley. The figure is roughly similar in Cork (3,046 ), but way behind the 5,275 patients on trolleys in Limerick so far in 2025.
