A Sunday treat awaits fans of classical violin and viola this weekend, with a city performance by the Vanbrugh Trio and Friends at St Joseph’s Church, Presentation Road, March 30, at 3pm.
Formerly RTÉ’s resident quartet in Cork, The Vanbrugh has been synonymous with music-making of the highest quality in Ireland for four decades.
The Vanbrugh Trio will be joined by two guest string players, Marja Gaynor, on violin, and Ed Creedon, on viola, to perform beautiful and contrasting works for strings by Mozart and Brahms.
These are Mozart’s Quintet in C major (K515 ), and Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet (for strings ) in B minor (Op 115 ).
When writing string quintets, it is no coincidence that Mozart, a viola player himself, decided to add an additional viola to the string quartet. The ‘viola quintet’ featuring in this concert begins light-hearted, but develops a depth and beautiful melodiousness, perhaps letting Mozart’s maturity shine through.
The Brahms quintet was originally written for clarinet and strings. With its glorious and romantic themes, it is deservedly one of the most popular works for chamber music.
Standard tickets are €20 with concession of €18, and €10 Social Inclusion Tickets are available to full-time students, asylum seekers, people in receipt of job seeker allowance, and disability allowance.
The concert is presented in partnership with the National String Quartet Foundation, and Music for Galway gratefully acknowledges the support from the Arts Council.
