Connemara ice producer secures deal to supply bagged ice exclusively to Tesco

A new Irish ice brand is hitting Tesco shelves nationwide as the retailer partners with Connemara’s Wild Atlantic Ice Company to launch Just Ice, a premium 2kg party bag of locally sourced ice. Available in all 183 Tesco stores and online, the collaboration marks a significant investment in local manufacturing and job creation.

The initiative took shape with Tesco as the primary customer, providing Wild Atlantic Ice Co with the confidence to invest over €750,000 in a state-of-the-art facility in Rossaveal, Connemara. With funding support from Údarás na Gaeltachta, the project has not only bolstered local production capacity but also generated new employment opportunities in the Gaeltacht region.

Wild Atlantic Ice Company founder Dave Robinson credited Tesco’s support as a key driver of the company’s expansion: "Partnering with Tesco gave us the confidence to invest in a brand-new facility, allowing us to support local jobs and communities," he said.

The investment aligns with Tesco Ireland’s broader commitment to sustainability and local sourcing. Joe Manning, commercial director at Tesco Ireland, emphasised the retailer’s focus on reducing food miles and strengthening local supply chains. “Launching Just Ice in our stores nationwide is another example of our commitment to sustainability and bringing the best Irish products to our customers," Mr Manning said. "However, this initiative goes beyond reducing food miles – by working with Wild Atlantic Ice Co, we’re not only offering high-quality, locally-sourced ice but also investing in the future of local communities.”

The backing of Údarás na Gaeltachta, the agency responsible for economic development in Gaeltacht areas, has played a crucial role in making this project a reality. Dearbháil Ní Chualáin, director of enterprise at ÚnaG, welcomed the strategic partnership: “We are delighted to support this venture, which strengthens the local Gaeltacht community. Strategic partnerships like this ensure that people can continue to live and work in areas like Connemara.”
