Galway City Council supported local Ballybane residents in a huge local clean up with over 100 bags collected last week. The residents who organised the clean-up were keen to take action on a litter black spot identified in a recent IBAL survey.
The local community took a proactive approach as they continue to work with the City Council on several positive local initiatives.
Welcoming the collaboration, Galway City Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer, Fergal Cushen said this is very much a community led initiative, and it is very evident from the level of engagement and feedback the pride there is here”.
Galway City Council supported the clean up with bags, gloves, litter pickers and waste collection, as well as staff participating in the clean-up.
Galway City Council’s Housing Liaison Officer, Edward Conlon, said that this community driven action by a local resident’s association continues on from the work done in Sruthán Mhuirlinne, and their concern to improve their IBAL standings is something they have taken on board, and shows real community spirit.
The clean-up was also very much a collaboration between the City Council’s own sections, with Parks, Environment, and Housing all providing support.
The local group is planning further clean-ups in the coming months and all assistance is welcome.
