Galway West Electoral Area and Knocknacarra -based Councillor Donal Lyons has welcomed the recent decision by the members of Galway City Council to take the McConns Lane in charge.

The process of taking McConns Lane in charge was initiated by a number of residents who were concerned regarding the future upkeep and maintenance of the lane.

Cllr Lyons met with the concerned residents and made representations to Galway City Council on their behalf.

“I had a number of meetings on site with officials from the Active Travel Department/Roads Department and it was agreed that the Taking-in-Charge process could be progressed. The public notice for Declaring a Road to be Public Road for McConns Lane was published in the Galway Advertiser in October 2024 and there were no submissions or observations from the public,” he said.

“At the recent meeting of Galway City Council, a report recommended that the lane should be taken-in-charge and I formally proposed the report which was unanimously passed by council members.

“I know that the decision of taking the lane in charge will be warmly welcomed by the residents of McConns Lane who have been actively campaigning to have this process finalised,” he said.

Cllr Lyons said that in the West Electoral Area there are a number of similar estates/lanes that have not yet been taken-in-charge and he will be pursuing these particular estates/lanes with officials to progress the taking in charge process.

“I want to thank officials in the Roads Department/Active Travel Department for their help and assistance in the process just finalised,” he added.
