Community is at the heart of Ballybane

If an army marches on its stomach, then Ballybane marches on the heart of its community.

No matter your interests, age, or aspirations, you’ll find Ballybane already buzzing with peer-led groups full of people who pour their time and energy into shared goals. It’s a place where community spirit isn’t just alive—it thrives.

Ballybane Community Garden

A shining example of how community-led projects can brighten up a neighbourhood in every way—environmentally, socially, and physically—is the Ballybane Community Garden.

Planted in 2006 on a once-derelict patch of council-owned land, the garden has blossomed into more than just a green space. Nearly 20 years on, it’s still growing strong, nurturing not just plants, but friendships and a real sense of belonging. Tucked away on Castlepark Road, the garden is kept flourishing through the hands and hearts of local people working together.

Ballybane Library

More than just shelves of books, Ballybane Library is the beating heart of the community—a place where ideas are shared, friendships are made, and knowledge grows. Whether you’re after books, eBooks, internet access, or simply a friendly spot to meet, the library has it all.

There’s always something happening, from book clubs for young and old to bilingual storytime for the little ones, crafting sessions, and adult education programmes.

Having recently supported the local community through Storm Éoywn and the subsequent power outages, offering a warm space, toilet facilities and access to electricity to charge devices, Ballybane Library’s contribution was invaluable to those in need.

Hosting a range of regularly scheduled meetings, talks and events, Ballybane Library does everything it can to ensure that there is an accessible social and learning outlet for the people of the community. From chess club, creative writing sessions, an English language chat group, digital skills lessons, parent lessons and baby and toddler rhyme time, the library is an environment that welcomes all.

To learn more about Ballybane Library, why not call in and see for yourself? Who knows, you may even find the inspiration to pick up a new hobby, develop a skill or make new friends.

Eastside Men’s Shed

Men’s Sheds might have started in Australia back in 2011, but they’ve found a warm welcome here in Ireland. The Eastside Men’s Shed offers a space where men can come together, share skills, have a chat, and support each other. It’s all about creating connections, tackling isolation, and looking after mental well-being, in a way that feels natural and easy.
