Galway City Museum commissioned LEGO® brick artist, Jessica Farrell, to create twelve tiny models, using LEGO® bricks and minifigures, to depict scenes from Galway’s past and present. The mini models featuring Pádraic Ó Conaire, Grace O’Malley, Turlough O’Connor and St MacDara, to name a few, have been strategically placed at different locations throughout the museum. The aim of the new Tiny Treasure Hunt is to find all characters and tick them off as you navigate through the galleries.
When all twelve tiny treasures have been spotted and recorded on the new Tiny Treasure Hunt, participants can bring their worksheets to reception to claim their certificate.
Treasure hunters will meet and learn about the miniature Pádraic Ó Conaire statue, commemorating the Galway man who happened to be one of the most important Irish-language writers of the early 20th century; Princess Gaillimh (or Galvia ), the daughter of king Breasal, who drowned in the nearby river of the same name; the tiny but still fearless Grace O’Malley (c. 1530–1603 ), known as Granuaile; Turlough O’Conor (1088–1156 ) the twelfth-century king of Connacht and high king of Ireland who built a fortress at the mouth of the Galway River in 1124. Also to be found somewhere in the SUPERHUMAN exhibition is a tiny LEGO® brick MedTech Researcher representing one of over 40,000 MedTech employees in Ireland.
Other tiny figures representing huge Galway characters hidden in the layers of past and present at Galway City Museum include St Sinach MacDara; Richard de Burgh (c.1193–1243 ); Roderic O’Flaherty; the Tribes of Galway; the Claddagh Fishermen; Claddagh Fishwives and a Marine Scientist!
Families and school groups are invited to visit Galway City Museum, pick up their free Tiny Treasure Hunt at reception and have some fun while learning more about Galway.
