Dr Saoire Boylan addresses some common questions from clinic consultations

Q: What’s the difference between Botox and fillers?

This is a common question! These two treatment options differ greatly. Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A, which is injected into muscles, especially those of the face. Botox reduces muscle activity, mostly in the upper face, allowing the skin creases which form with facial expression to soften. Botox typically lasts around three months. Fillers on the other hand are usually a soft gel, such as hyaluronic acid, normally used for parts of the lower face, and usually last between six and 18 months. Fillers work by simply adding volume to augment face shape or soften lines.

Q: I don’t know what treatment will help. How do I find out?

Most clinics offer some form of free consultation, with some requiring a deposit which is then used towards treatment cost. At our clinic, we offer a free no commitment consultation without pressure to proceed with any particular treatment. We don’t work under sales targets, and aim to provide an environment where patients are provided with important information to allow for safe decision making.

Q: Do men and women need different treatments?

Male patients tend to have different goals and concerns to female patients. In addition, men tend to require slightly higher dosages of botulinum toxin to achieve muscle relaxation. Many men now avail of treatments for various concerns and are welcome to attend for a free consultation similar to female patients.
