Minister of State, Seán Canney TD, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting individuals, families, communities, businesses, and sports clubs severely impacted by Storm Éowyn. The Minister acknowledged the hardship experienced, particularly in the west of Ireland, including areas close to his own constituency of Galway east.

Speaking after a Private Members’ Business motion in the Dáil on the Government’s response to the storm, Minister Canney assured those affected that support is available through the Department of Social Protection’s Humanitarian Assistance Scheme, which provides financial relief to households suffering severe damage. This scheme is designed to assist those in greatest need, helping them to recover and rebuild in the aftermath of extreme weather events.

“The Government recognises the devastating impact that Storm Éowyn has had on people’s homes, businesses, and community organisations. We remain committed to assisting those most affected, ensuring they receive the necessary support during this difficult time,” said Minister Canney.

Minister Canney also highlighted the Government’s longer-term commitment to enhancing support structures for those affected by severe weather events.

“As outlined in the Programme for Government, there is a clear commitment to developing an Extreme Weather Event Assistance Scheme. This scheme will provide targeted support for homeowners, community organisations, farmers, and businesses impacted by extreme weather events. The Government is prioritising its development to ensure that those affected can access timely and effective assistance.”

The Minister acknowledged the resilience of communities affected by Storm Éowyn and praised the ongoing efforts of emergency services, local authorities, and volunteers who have worked tirelessly in response to the crisis.

“I want to recognise the incredible hardship that so many people have endured, particularly in the west of Ireland. Communities have faced significant challenges, yet they continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and solidarity. The Government is committed to standing by them and ensuring they receive the necessary supports to recover.”

Minister Canney reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that all available assistance is mobilised and that longer-term solutions are brought forward as a priority.

The Government will continue to work closely with all relevant agencies to ensure that impacted individuals and organisations can access assistance without delay.
