Independent councillor Terry O’Flaherty has urged as many people as possible to get involved in the planning of the Renmore Neighbourhood Park project, which promises to transform the area.
The project aims to create “a well-connected and walkable coastal neighbourhood with re-imagined and activated green spaces”, with biodiversity-friendly planting, age and mobility-friendly pathways, and spaces for play and relaxation.
This, its vision statement says, will “support active lifestyle within the community and provide opportunities for improved health and well-being, social interaction and contact with nature”.
A public consultation process on the ambitious plan has been launched by Galway City Council, with an open day to be held in the Renmore Community Centre on Wednesday, February 12, from 1-8pm. Cllr O’Flaherty said it was important that as many people as possible attend.
“This is their chance to have their views heard and have their say on what should be done in their own neighbourhood and have a real input into what is to come.
“This project could really transform the area,” she said.
A dedicated website, renmorepark.com, contains a wealth of information on what the plan – focussing on three main areas, Renmore, Ballyloughane and Lough Atalia – might entail, as well as a survey in which residents can outline what improvements they would like to see. There is also an option to print out the survey and send the completed form by post.
Responses from this initial consultation survey will be translated into preliminary design options for further community consultation in mid-2025. The survey will be open until Thursday, February 27.
Cllr O’Flaherty said that a playground for Renmore, for which she had secured funding through many City Council budgets over the years, would be a priority.
“When this process is completed and a site has been chosen for the playground, a commitment has been given by the City Council that the first project to be delivered in the Master Plan will be the long awaited playground for children in Renmore and it is my intention to hold the council to their word in this case,“ she added.
