Remembering my friend Maeve — Slán leat, a Chara Dílis

Maeve Joyce-Crehan

Maeve Joyce-Crehan

I have known Maeve for over 40 years; I was one of her best friends.

I find that some Mayo people tend to gravitate towards other Mayo people (and my friends often slag me for saying that ) I'm certain, however, that we would still be friends, regardless of whether she was from Mayo or not. (As I type, I can imagine her laughing at me for saying this! )

Maeve was from Foxford but her love for Galway transcended her Mayo roots. As a valuable and significant contributor to Galway, she was an icon.

Many of her friends have described her as an inspiration to them, as she has been to me and many others over the years.

In my opinion, she was the perfect combination of loyalty, professionalism, friendliness, and work ethic, and I was not ashamed to admit I copied her.

I told her as much. In her company, she always encouraged and empowered you to be the best version of yourself and you left feeling much better about yourself and the world around you.

Collaborating with her was always a pleasure. When we asked her to help us plan Gaillimh le Gaeilge events, she was full of creative ideas and enthusiasm.

You could always count on Maeve to tell you how it was and have your back. Likewise, she was passionate about sharing her knowledge and expertise with new artists and startups.

Aside from having an impeccable sense of style and beautiful hair, Maeve was always ahead of her time. She was just one in a million and I loved her for it. I am very proud to call her my friend.

We shopped, laughed, cried, socialized, and attended many Galway events together.

As always, we pressed forward, feeling positive and trying to ignore the fact that this day would eventually arrive. I will miss her so much.

Comhbhrón ó chroí to her husband Mick, her daughter Sarah, and Tommie, her adoring grandson, along with all her family and many friends.

Bhí tú i gcónaí chun tosaigh orainn a chara, agus tá tú chun tosaigh orainn arís agus tú ag lasadh an bealaigh dúinn chuig slí na fírinne.

Go dtí go gcastar ar a chéile arís muid, grá mo chroí thú agus suaimhneas síoraí go raibh agat a chara dílis.
