Ireland will soon celebrate its third bank holiday in honour of Brigit, both the revered pre-Christian goddess and the Celtic Christian saint.
"The bank holiday has sparked a resurgence of interest in Brigid's rich cultural heritage, inspiring communities across Ireland to reconnect with ancient customs and rituals tied to her legacy," says Jenny Beale, Director of Brigit’s Garden. "We are excited to be celebrating at Brigit’s Garden over the Bank Holiday weekend."
Brigid’s Day, celebrated on February 1, marks the Celtic festival of Imbolc, signalling the shift from winter into spring. This time of renewal has been observed with rituals celebrating nature, creativity, and peace. One of the most enduring customs is the crafting of Brigid’s crosses from rushes, a protective symbol hung in homes to safeguard families from harm. Another cherished tradition is the making of the Brídeog, a doll representing St. Brigid, often carried from house to house in blessing ceremonies.
St. Brigid has a dual identity as both goddess and saint. The stories and symbols of the goddess Brigid, linked to healing and midwifery, poetry, smith-craft and the forge, were later incorporated into the life of Saint Brigid of Kildare. Her stories continue to inspire spiritual reflection, nature connection and artistic expression, making her a powerful figure for modern Ireland.
To honour Brigid, Brigit’s Garden in Roscahill, Co. Galway are delighted to invite the community to three special events celebrating her spirit and traditions:
