Two laboratory teams within the Marine Institute have recently achieved green certification status as part of the ‘My Green Lab’ accreditation programme. The Molecular Biology Unit (Fish Health Unit & Shellfish Microbiology ) and Phytoplankton Team (Shellfish Safety ) achieved the standards of the programme which seeks to reduce the environmental impact of laboratories through a combination of organisational initiatives and behaviour change programmes.
These certifications build on the Marine Institute’s previous achievements in the ‘My Green Lab’ programme. In 2023, the Institute’s Biotoxin Chemistry team achieved Green standard and its Newport laboratory team achieved Platinum standard.
Being a green certified laboratory has multiple benefits including helping to protect the environment, cost savings, promoting sustainability, supporting innovation, and creating greater staff engagement.

Achieving impressive results like these speaks volumes about the commitment and effort everyone has invested in our laboratory sustainability journey.”
The accreditation of My Green Lab certification advances the Institute’s aim to reduce resource use in all areas across the organisation, as outlined in the Marine Institute’s 2024 Climate Action Roadmap.
