Dynamic world folk music ensemble NoCrows, will perform at Monroe’s Live on Friday, January 31, in a fully seated show, with doors open at 8pm.
The Sligo outfit’s original music draws on a wide array of influences, including Irish traditional, rumba, classical, jazz, rock, and Balkan music, creating a distinctive and captivating sound.
Formed in 2005 during a casual session at Sligo’s renowned Shoot the Crows pub, the band’s name pays homage to their origins.
Over the years, NoCrows has evolved into an eclectic six-piece ensemble featuring members from Ireland, Siberia, Switzerland, and Mallorca.
The band’s members include Anna Houston on cello, mandolin, and vocals; Eddie Lee on bass and vocals; Felip Carbonell on guitar and vocals; Oleg Ponomarev on violin; Ray Coen on guitar, fiddle, and vocals; and Steve Wickham on fiddle and vocals.
Wickham is recognised as Ireland’s premier rock fiddler. His distinctive playing has been a major contribution to the Waterboys’ ground breaking records over the years.
He became a member of The Waterboys in 1985 shortly after playing on their seminal album This is The Sea. He made his recording debut with U2 in 1982 on their album, War, playing on ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ and ‘Drowning Man’.
The NoCrows, they have performed at prestigious festivals such as Glastonbury, Dranouter, Sitges Live, and Sligo Live, as well as venues across Europe.
Their unique blend of styles has earned the group acclaim across Europe and beyond, and this gig is a chance for Galway audiences to experience their sound, fresh from performing at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow.
In 2019, they were named Band of the Year by the esteemed arts venue Zehntscheuer in Ravensburg, Germany.
The band’s international reach expanded further in 2022 with their debut performance in France at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris.
With six CD releases to their name, NoCrows recently launched their first limited-edition vinyl album, simply titled NoCrows celebrating 18 years together.
This remastered-for-vinyl ‘best of’ collection includes bonus tracks and compositions, showcasing the band’s continued creativity and evolution.
