Livin’ Dred Theatre will present JM Synge’s masterpiece The Playboy of the Western World, at Galway's Mick Lally Theatre over two days next February.
On Friday, February 14 - St Valentine's Day - and on Saturday, February 15, 2025, award-winning director Aaron Monaghan will oversee a new production teeming with Synge’s lyrical language, satire and notable characters.
Monaghan intends to mould this comic into something new for this 2025 production, and this tragic love story should remain as shocking today as when it ignited riots over a century ago.
This new production has a cast of 11, including Gerard Byrne, Colin Campbell, Amelia Crowley, Naoise Dunbar, Ciara Ivie, Garrett Lombard, Éilish McLaughlin, Meadhbh Maxwell, John Olohan, Sean T O’Meallaigh, and Caitríona Williams.
Together, they bring JM Synge’s work to life when the shy, poetic Christy Mahon stumbles into a rural tavern claiming to have killed his father, where he sets off a frenzy of fascination that turns the Irish countryside upside down - transforming him into an unlikely hero - and capturing the affections of the feisty and beguiling Pegeen Mike.
But as the young lovers dangerously flirt with an unexpected romance, the emergence of a mysterious figure suddenly casts Christy’s bold and ever-growing story into wicked doubt, until the lines between notorious truth and outrageous fantasy become hilariously blurred.
Experience the comedy, chaos, and controversy with Livin’ Dred’s savage new production of JM Synge’s classic The Playboy of the Western World next February in the Mick Lally Theatre.
