Sean Canney Independent TD has been advised that Galway County Council carried out Traffic & Speed surveys recently at Menlough Village, over a 7-day period in late November.

Galway County Council have carried out Traffic and Speed survey in the village of Menlough following concerns expressed by local people and residents regarding speeding on the R339 through Menlough village.

This section of road has a 50 km/h speed limit, and the monitors were placed in the vicinity of the national school and the church.

Dep Canney said that the data captured indicates significant non-compliance with the Statutory Speed Limit of 50 km/h

National School:

76% non-compliance

maximum speed recorded 135 km/h

Church:

65% non-compliance

maximum speed recorded 127 km/h

This information along with the recorded data set, has been officially forwarded to An Garda Síochána by the Council for review, and for consideration of additional speed enforcement activity at this location.

Dep Canney said that the Council intend to draft a traffic calming scheme for this location, which will be subject to an approval process and submission for funding.

“I am fully supportive of any safety measures arising from the data in these surveys which Cllr. Evelyn Parsons arranged with the Council engineers prior to a public meeting last November.

“This level of non-compliance is the worst that I have come across and is frightening the cars speed past a school and church in the village at up to 135km/h. It is expected that immediate enforcement action is undertaken by the Gardai.

The design for ramps is being completed at council level and Cllr Evelyn Parsons and I will be endeavouring to advance the implementation of speed ramps as a matter of urgency,” he concluded.
