Galway has been crowned the most generous county in the world for 2024, solidifying its reputation for community spirit and kindness. This distinction comes from statistics released by GoFundMe, the global crowdfunding platform, which also named Ireland the ‘most generous country in the world’ for the sixth consecutive year.
With some €50 million raised across Ireland in 2024 from some 850,000 donations, Galwegians emerged as the most selfless contributors, showcasing an unparalleled spirit of giving and support for those in need. “Galway’s exceptional generosity reflects its strong sense of community and ability to rally behind meaningful causes,” noted GoFundMe’s report.
Galway’s Standout Campaigns
Among the thousands of fundraisers launched on GoFundMe this year, Galway campaigns shone for their ability to unite people in times of adversity. Medical treatments, humanitarian efforts, and family-focused initiatives were at the heart of Galway’s most notable fundraisers. With Galway’s top five standout campaigns alone raising a combined sum of some €428,000, the generous spirit of the county’s residents has delivered life-changing results for those who need it most.
Ella Farrell Cancer Treatment & Recovery Fund
The ‘Ella Farrell Cancer Treatment & Recovery Fund’ was created by Ella’s parents, Caroline and Darragh Farrell in January 2024, following the 21-year-old’s diagnosis of a grade four medulla blastoma, commonly known as a brain tumour. An aggressive tumour that is predominantly found in children, Ella’s condition required treatments both at home and abroad, with surgery to remove the tumour being carried out by neurosurgeons in Beaumont Hosptial, Dublin followed by six to eight weeks of ‘Proton Beam Radiation’ at a hospital in Essen, Germany.
With Ella’s treatment estimated to last more than 14 months, her parents Caroline and Darragh set up the GoFundMe fundraiser with a ‘heavy heart’, motivated by the significant financial impact the treatments will accrue over the period, coupled with the fact that the pair’s income will be reduced during this period. Any excess funds raised will later be used to support Ella in her dream to finish her studies and become a primary school teacher.
Having raised some €180,000, the ‘Ella Farrell Cancer Treatment & Recovery Fund’ is a prime example of the generous spirit Galway has been recognised for. This fund, much like the others in the top five standout campaigns: ‘Pat Larder and Family’, ‘Support Ultan’, ‘Lora, Durgham and Adam Walk for Gaza’ and ‘Bring Gaga Home’, not only highlight Galway’s capacity for compassion but emphasise the county’s ability to unite in the face of hardship.
Nationwide effort
Galway wasn’t alone in showcasing immense goodwill, with Limerick coming second, Cork third, Waterford fourth and Dublin fifth in the list of the most charitable counties in Ireland.
Tim Cadogan, CEO of GoFundMe, praised Ireland’s unwavering commitment to helping others. “The Irish people’s incredible kindness and willingness to support one another, even during difficult times, continues to inspire us all,” Cadogan said. “Whether it’s €5 or €500, every act of generosity creates a ripple effect of hope and change. This year’s inspiring fundraisers are a testament to the Irish spirit - resilient, compassionate and unwavering in its support of those in need.”
Global generosity on the rise
Globally, GoFundMe reported that two donations were made every second throughout 2024, demonstrating the power of collective goodwill. Across Ireland alone, over 15,000 fundraisers were launched, marking a year defined by community strength and compassion.
As Galway continues to lead the way with its exceptional generosity, it serves as a shining example of how a community can come together to make a profound impact on lives locally and globally. Whether supporting neighbours, families, or international causes, the people of Galway have proven that their spirit of giving knows no bounds.
