National mental health charity Turn2Me is urging people across Ireland to check in on their elderly neighbours over Christmas. The festive season can be a difficult time for elderly people who may be living alone, facing mobility challenges, or grieving the loss of loved ones. A simple gesture of kindness could make a big difference to their mental health during this time of year.
“Christmas can be an isolating time for elderly people, particularly those who live alone or have limited social connections,” said Fiona O’Malley, CEO of Turn2Me. “Loneliness and social isolation are serious challenges for many older adults, and the holiday season can amplify these feelings. Taking the time to check in on your elderly neighbours could brighten their Christmas and support their mental health.”
The charity said checking in on elderly neighbours is important for three reasons:
1. Combatting loneliness
Many elderly people spend Christmas alone, with family living abroad or unable to visit. This can lead to feelings of sadness and isolation. A quick chat at the door, delivering a Christmas card, or inviting them for tea can help them feel less lonely and remind them they are valued and cared for. Many people may not want to impose and can be too proud to reach out. Even a small act of kindness, like inviting them over for lunch or to watch a Christmas movie, can go a long way.
2. Providing practical support
Winter weather and holiday closures can make it harder for older people to access essentials such as groceries, medications, or medical appointments. Checking in on elderly neighbours gives you the opportunity to see if they need assistance with these tasks. Offering help with shopping or clearing icy pathways could make their Christmas safer and more comfortable.
3. Strengthening community connections
Taking time to reach out to elderly neighbours fosters a sense of community and connection. It encourages them to engage more with their local area and can make them feel part of the celebrations. Stronger community ties benefit everyone, creating a more inclusive and caring neighbourhood.
Turn2Me provides free online mental health services, including peer support groups and one-to-one counselling sessions, a free meditation programme and a free ‘Thought Catcher’ online mood diary. These resources are available to any adult experiencing loneliness, anxiety, or stress during the festive season, on Turn2Me.ie “This Christmas, we encourage everyone to take small steps to make a big difference,” Ms O’Malley added. “Kindness costs nothing, but it can mean the world to someone who feels lonely or isolated during the holidays.”
