TG4 welcomes the New Year with Carna an Cheoil agus na nAmhrán, a documentary that takes viewers on a journey through the rich musical and cultural heritage of Carna in Connemara.
Airing on January 1 at 9.20pm, this programme celebrates a century of Carna’s enduring traditions and the people who bring them to life.
Carna has drawn music collectors for over a hundred years, captivated by its blend of Irish music, song and dance. These early collectors left behind a trove of recordings that continue to shape the cultural identity of this remarkable village. The new documentary, produced by local film makers, delves into these sound and film archives, unearthing some of the many rich scenes from the documentary. Rare and stunning snippets of Carna’s oral art forms that have resonate through generations.
The programme will include interview with local artists, including Bríd Ní Mhaoilchiaráin, Caoimhe and Séamus Ó Flatharta, Saileog Ní Cheannabháin, and many others, exploring how these traditions have withstood the tests of time. From sean-nós dance to evocative stroytelling, from music to song, it offers a window into the living history of Irish culture.
Carna an Cheoil agus na Amhrán will feature contributions from renowned artists such as PJ Ó hIarnáin, Marcus Ó hIarnáin, Caitríona Ní Cheannabháin, Micheál Ó Cuaig, Peadar Ó Ceannabháin, Páraic Phat Phatch Ó Ceannabháin, Róisín Nic Dhonncha, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Seán McKiernan, and Ríona and Sarah Ní Chuirrín,
