Celebrated Galway artist Joe Boske and Galwegian Michael Quinn, have collaborated to create a unique blend of visual art and poetry in their publication, Rathgar Odyssey.

The booklet is exclusively available from Charlie Byrnes Bookshop in Galway. This limited-edition publication features a dozen iconic prints by Joe Boske, coupled with the engaging poem ‘Rathgar Odyssey’ by Michael Quinn.

The narrative takes readers on a captivating journey through Rathgar, reminiscing about Galway, while dropping in the Rathgar 108 pub for a few pints before tea. This was edited by the renowned poet Patrick Chapman.

Ray Burke, author of ‘Joyce County’, praises the booklet as a “smooth and creamy combination” of Boske’s vintage Galway visions and Quinn’s lyrical ramblings.

“To be a Galwegian is to know the work of Joe Boske intimately. Beloved by anyone who’s attended this city’s renowned arts festival or supped a long pint in Tigh Neachtain, where his work is framed on almost every wall, Boske’s art is a cultural lynchpin both locally and internationally.

“In this booklet it is beautifully paired with Michael Quinn’s poem – a lyrical, picaresque companion to the featured pieces. As a showcase of work, this unique blend of visual art and poetry is indeed welcome,”opined Ruth Quinlan, poet and co-editor of Skylight 47 poetry magazine.

“In this stunningly attractive and highly amusing publication that extraordinary talent that is the artist Joe Boske teams up with Michael Quinn, to produce a piece of work that is both hugely engaging and visually spectacular” according to Gerry Hanberry, poet, writer and musician.

He added that “leafing through the pages of this fine publication is to join these two great talents on an entertaining ramble through the garden of artistic and poetic delights.”

“This is a mischievous modern take on Joyce, paired with playful art. This production is a delightful celebration of James Joyce’s Ulysses, reimagined through the lens of a modern poem that places the individual’s world at its centre.

“Michael Quinn’s voice as writer is entertaining and reflective. The result is a poem that is both mischievous and knowing. It invites readers to explore their own inner landscapes with fresh eyes.

Equally impressive is Joe Boske’s artwork that accompanies the poem. Quirky and humorous, it complements the poem perfectly and brings the themes to life in unexpected ways. The interplay between the words and images is dynamic and engaging.

This project is a brilliant example of how classic literary themes can be revitalised through collaboration between different artistic mediums. It’s a joyful, thought-provoking experience that honours Joyce’s legacy while forging new creative paths,” said Liam Horan, short story writer.

This special edition is limited to only 1,000 signed copies, with more than 250 already allocated. The book serves as a nostalgic reminder of the early Galway Arts Festival and is expected to sell out quickly.
