The tireless and selfless dedication of Renmore native, Maura Fahy received well-deserved recognition this week as she was named Connacht Carer of the Year.

Maura was selected for the Connacht title alongside a strong field of inspiring nominees, following her being previously named Galway Carer of the Year in October.

A mother of three to Ronan (26 ), Hannah (23 ) and Emma (21 ), Maura took on the responsibility for caring for her parents; Helena (90 ) and Paddy (94 ) 14 years ago, following her father's cancer diagnosis and subsequent leg amputation.

The level of dedication, compassion and selflessness displayed by Maura over the past decade and a half has earned her the praise of many, resulting in her earning the titles of both Galway Carer of the Year 2024 and Connacht Carer of the Year. Sadly, Maura received news of her nomination just days after Paddy passed away.

The win 'underscores the importance of acknowledging and supporting family carers'

In a statement issued by Family Carers Ireland regarding the event, the organisation described Maura's selfless support of her family, while also highlighting the often ignored role of carers in Irish society.

"In her role as a carer, Maura has consistently gone above and beyond to ensure the well-being of her loved one, demonstrating patience, strength, and resourcefulness. Whether navigating daily challenges or creating moments of joy, her efforts highlight the immense value and impact of carers within Irish society. While her story is uniquely hers, it reflects the shared experience of countless carers who provide essential support behind the scenes," said the organisation.

The award ceremony celebrated carers from across Ireland, bringing together individuals and families whose lives have been shaped by the incredible contributions of caregivers. Speaking at the event, a representative from the organising body praised Maura’s dedication, calling her an “inspiration to us all".

According to Family Carers Ireland, Maura’s recognition as Connacht Carer of the Year 'underscores the importance of acknowledging and supporting Family Carers, who often work tirelessly and selflessly to improve the lives of others'.

"Her achievement serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and the profound difference one person can make in the lives of many," stated the organisation.
