Demand for salt gritting for estates

Treacherous weather conditions are resulting in dangerous road and footpath services in Galway's housing estates warns Cllr Cheevers.

Treacherous weather conditions are resulting in dangerous road and footpath services in Galway's housing estates warns Cllr Cheevers.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan Cheevers has criticised the local government for failing to allocate funding to grit pathways and roads in council housing-estates and pathways in public areas across the city.

Cllr Cheevers said, “As we come into poor weather conditions in coming weeks, it is not acceptable that funding is not being allocated to local authorities to carry out safety measures in council estates during these treacherous weather conditions.

“We have elderly people and people with disabilities prisoners in their own homes because they are afraid to leave the house to go to the shops or appointments because they are afraid of slippery pathways and roads.

“We need to see funding allocated and salt bins also put into estates. I am asking for emergency funding to be allocated to carry out this work and makes estates safer over winter.”
