Galway Youth Orchestra gave its Winter Concert in the auditorium of the Galway Community College Music Centre on Saturday.
The concert featured its three orchestral groups Junior , Intermediate and Senior under their conductors Ingrid Nicola, Joanne Cater and Michael Dooley.
The young players aged between 8-18 years old gave beautiful performances to a delighted audience of friends and family. They had started work on their music in September in their weekly rehearsals in Colaiste na Coiribe and showed how with great direction, even children as young as eight or nine can learn to produce orchestral performances.
A special treat for the audience and players was when their conductors Ingrid (violin ), Joanne (flute ) and Michael (bassoon ) played a Mozart Divertimento written for their three instruments.
As well as being the 42nd birthday of GYO, the concert was also an opportunity to recognize the service these conductors have given to the orchestra. All three were presented with Galway Chrystal plaques to mark 30 years to Michael Dooley, 20 years to Joanne Cater and 5 years to Ingrid Nicola.
The concert finished with a lovely rendition of “Walking in the air” from the Snowman with soloist Con Naughton on clarinet.
