11.37 — As a result of high winds during Storm Darragh, the New Clifton Hill Reservoir in Galway city is experiencing power supply issues this morning.

As a result, Uisce Éireann customers on the west side of Galway city, Moycullen, Barna and surrounding areas may be experiencing some water supply issues or intermittent disruptions to their supply today.

Uisce Éireann are working with the ESB to restore power supply as quickly as possible.

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.

Uisce Éireann’s customer care team is available to help 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on X @IWCare with any queries. For further updates, visit the service and supply section of www.water.ie (outage reference number: WIC00085950 ).

11.29 Saturday - Storm Darragh passed across Ireland overnight, bringing with it destructive winds and triggering a Red Weather Warning for Galway from 9pm yesterday until 2am this morning.

Galway County Council met this morning at 9am and respective local areas reported impacts on the ground.

The aftermath of the storm has left a significant number of trees uprooted, causing widespread road closures across the county. Major routes impacted include:

N59 is closed just west of Oughterard

N65 is blocked between Killimor and Portumna

N83 on the city side of Corinthians is closed

N84 at Corrandulla Cross closed

N63 Mountbellew to Ballygar, number of trees down but passable

Many other Regional and Local roads are blocked due to fallen trees. Galway County Council Roads Crews are working to clear trees and debris off the roads but delays can be expected throughout the day.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel as crews work to clear debris and reopen roads.

ESB have reported that 395,000 premises are out of power. This is a significant event for the ESB and they have reported that this is a multi-day event to bring power back.

If the public see lines are down, they should treat them as ‘live’ and report them to the ESB.

The Fire Service nationally took 478 calls overnight, 100 of these were made to the Galway County and City Fire Service.

21.19 - Services on some routes will operate at a reduced speed this evening and tomorrow: Westport/Ballina/Galway to Athlone.

21.15 - Please bring your pets inside even if they are normally outside, for the duration of the storm. Check fencing & gates before letting pets out to toilet.

Livestock need dry shelter & gates should be checked and secured.

21.13  - The 20:50 Galway to Heuston expected +40 minutes delayed from Galway.

Significant ongoing delays on Galway/Westport routes

A freight train is stopped in Clonydonnin due to a mechanical issue, with passenger trains operating around this train.

21.02 — The hardy #COPEGalwaySleepOut participants are prepared for #StormDarragh! With safety being paramount ahead of the red weather alert, they have changed location to ‘shelter in place’ in the lobby of the COPE Galway Charity Shop at Newtownsmith.

20.46 — Significant ongoing delays and disruption on the Galway to Heuston route due to a mechanical issue on a freight train stopped between Athlone and Clara.  There'll be a connection to Heuston in Athlone.

20.41 — Met Éireann has issued a Status Red wind warning for counties Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim & Donegal. Coillte recreational forests in affected counties will be closed until Monday December 9th. Please do not enter forest lands during this time

20.27 — The Road Safety Authority (RSA ) is advising all road users to take extreme care today and over the weekend as Met Eireann has issued red weather warnings as Storm Darragh approaches.

Storm Darragh will bring very strong and gusty winds as well as heavy rain at times. There may be fallen trees, damage to power lines, wave overtopping and there may be very difficult travelling conditions and damage to temporary structures.

19.15 —  Taoiseach Simon Harris urged those living in areas covered by red warnings to take them "extraordinarily seriously".

"A red weather warning does mean do not travel during that period of time, and even though it is a Friday night and coming up to the Christmas season, I'd really encourage people to heed that advice and indeed to follow closely weather advice in the hours ahead," he said.
