University of Galway have launched its third annual report on Widening Participation as well as launching a Sensory Campus website. The Widening Participation report shows the number of students from underrepresented groups at UG, while the Sensory Campus website showcases sensory friendly spaces on the campus.
The Widening Participation report is being released at the University's Access Centre. It showcases the number of students from underrepresented groups and outlines the University's efforts to increase equal opportunity for all students, such as support systems and scholarships.
This years report found that from 2010 to 2023, the University saw a 29% increase in students entering through various Widening Participation routes. These routes include Further Education and Training for mature students, DARE for people with disabilities and HEAR for students under 23 whose economic or social background are underrepresented in higher education. It was also found that 739 students registered to study through the University Access Centre in 2023, the highest level recorded.
Professor Ciara Meehan, Dean of Students at University of Galway, said, “It is hugely important to celebrate our achievements in creating opportunities for people to study at University of Galway, as well as celebrate our students and the people who make that happen. Our continual success in opening doors for people from underrepresented groups is testament to the value of embedding this work across our entire university community."
The University Sensory Campus website was also launched this week which showcases indoor and outdoor sensory friendly spaces and facilities. The map was developed by landscape architects and neurodivergent students and aims to support all students, in particular members of the neurodivergent community.
