A city councillor has expressed her annoyance at how Woodquaty has been excluded in the city's festive lighting programme.

Cllr Josie Forde said that she wants the Council to explain how such a key aprt of the city's commercial centre could be left in the festive dark.

"It is truly disappointing to see how Woodquay has been overlooked in this year’s festive Christmas lighting display, especially when the rest of the city is beautifully illuminated. Woodquay, with its rich history and deep connections to Galway’s identity, has long been a cornerstone of the city.

"In Christmasses past, it felt like every corner of Galway was part of the festive spirit, but this year, it seems Woodquay has been left in the shadows," she said, adding that this oversight is particularly concerning given the contributions of local businesses in Woodquay to the city’s commercial rates.

"These businesses are vital to Galway’s economy and community life, and they deserve to see their area represented in the festive cheer. If Galway City Council is proposing increases to these rates, it is only reasonable to expect that all areas, including Woodquay, receive equitable attention and investment.

"I intend to seek clarification from the council as to why Woodquay was excluded from this year’s display and advocate for its inclusion in future celebrations. Perhaps the spirit of Christmas past can inspire a renewed commitment to fairness, ensuring no part of our city is left behind during such an important season.

"Woodquay has always been a pivotal part of Galway, and I hope this matter can be addressed swiftly to restore its place in the city’s festive traditions," she concluded.
